A spider web in the morning light along the banks of the Rappanhannock River in Virginia.

A spider web in the morning light along the banks of the Rappanhannock River in Virginia.

This is an image of a spider web in the early morning near a creek in Virginia This photograph captured in October, 1999 was taken by Jim Epler during the fall in Culpeper, VA at the banks of the Rappanhannock. It is cataloged under the terms nature, twilight scenes and lakes & rivers in this photography database.

The image was exposed on 35mm Kodak Tri-X 400 black & white film stock using a Pentax Asahi Spotmatic II camera with a Asahi Pentax 55mm f/2 lens stopped to f/999 and exposed at a speed of 1/1000th of a second.

Photographer Comments: On my way to Charlottesville, VA one early morning I witnessed a beautiful scene while driving south on Route 29. Light was illuminating a hazy mist which was slowly rising off a stream bed to my right. I decided to make a quick u-turn in my Isuzu Trooper and looked for a place where I could photograph the scene. Time was of the essence because I knew the sun would soon be too high above the horizon and the moment would be lost forever. The only access point was via a personal driveway, so I quickly parked and ran down to the creek bed and set up my tripod as fast as I could. Directly in front of me was a large spider web, so I used it as my focal point and set the aperture as wide as possible to create a very narrow depth of field. In fact, I might have utilized a neutral density (.3 or .9 ND) filter but I can't remember.

To this day I wish I had a more powerful telescopic lens to better capture the drops of dew that were present on the threads of the web. In closing, I was unable to capture the misty scene I first witnessed from the roadway but the image I ended up with has enough artistic expression to merit posting here in my database.

Additionally, search phrases or terms that people actively seeking pictures on the Internet related to this particular topic might include the words Virginia, creek, route 29, am light, morning, Culpeper, spider web, misty, fog, Rappanhannock river, stream, mist and sunlight, so they are included on this details page as a way to improve the photograph's profile in searches and Web queries.
